Step into the Realm: The Legendary Roots

The Roots has been one of my favorite hip-hop groups. I haven't missed an album and they were always with me during road trips, writing sessions and painting sessions. I remember seeing them live a few times, the most memorable was at the House of Blues where Res open up for them and I was front, dead center.

I got to meet them thanks to this guy right here! Dave has known them for 20 years and was so cool  enough to bring me to their BET Experience event, "The Roots present Hip Hop" where I got to hangout backstage with them and their friends. I wonder what my 1999 self would have thought if I traveled back in time and told her she was going to meet and hang out with them. I'm sure she would flip the fuck out! I got to live a day in the life of  Dave NY.

Dave suggest that if I wanted to get a picture, that I should do so before they hit the stage because afterwards they just want to chill. I can respect that. If you know me personally, I don't get too starstruck so I don't really ask for autographs or pictures. But this is Questlove. I know I would regret it if I didn't ask.

He was so cool about it! He even offered to take the selfie since i looked around and saw nobody available to take the pic. Completely made my night from there on out!

Dave also helped me get a pic with Blackthought. OMG, felt like I was in highschool all over again!

From my POV back stage in the right wing of the stage.

Speaking of highschool, Redman and Mef were also on the bill and I felt my highschool crush well up again. I swear, their albums may have been the 90s "on our way to the clubs" anthem as we cruise around Sunset Blvd with the Mustang's top down.

And here is a blast from the past, Doug E. Fresh..
Where was my Le Coq Sportif and aquanet?
Doug E. Fresh were one of my favorite artists. Yo MTV Raps taped on VHS tapes, playing it over and over again until it snapped. Mad memories!!

The end of the night shot with the Step N Repeat. an epic night!

Reflection Eternal

Thanks to Dave NY, my friend Amreen and I got to see Talib Kweli's show at the Echoplex on summer solstice! Dave is the tour manager for Kweli and was soooo cool enough to invite us to be his guests and we had VIP passes. I got to stand on the stage and saw him rock live to a very packed house!

Amreen, Talib Kweli and me

I told him that Reflection Eternal and Beautiful Struggle, as well as his group with Mos Def, Black Star, were very important to me. Those albums were in rotation during a time when I was transforming my life into the creative/community building life that I lead today.  Now, I admit, after those two albums, I haven't caught on but those first two albums are enough to be in constant rotation at my house.

Backstage shenanigans with Dave, Amreen and DJ EQue, Talib's wife

He went out for an encore but rather than running back on stage, Amreen and I stayed in the green room and just chilled. She had vodka. I had moon pies.

Onto the next adventure!

International Women's Month Recap

It seems like the only time I can update my blog is when I am forced to rest. Currently, I have a bit of a fever and I have been sleeping all day and evening. Now I am wide awake and can't sleep. With the rain falling down outside, and with Blood+ streaming on Netflix, what perfect time than to spill my guts onto my blog.

March is Women's History Month. Luckily, I live in a state which hosts so many events and March was not only beautifully filled with such events but it was also stressful.

I managed to triple-booked myself again.

But don't get me wrong. It's all blessings and I am nothing but thankful.

I have been involved with Mujeres de Maiz for the past eight years. This year marked their 15th anniversary- their quinceniera! I started getting involved with the group/show as a spoken word artist, way before I was known as a visual artist. This year, since I was spread so thin, I could only be involved as a visual artist. I am so grateful that Erica F., the curator, chose my work to be part of it.

"Water to the Flame"

This year, I was asked to be part of the 1st Annual Bgrrrlz Rhapsody Festival. This was hosted and organized by hip-hop legend, Kuttin' Kandi. This festival was a month-long hip-hop themed show dedicated to Women's Herstory Month.

Kuttin' Kandi asked me to be part of an all women panel called "Womyn in Hip-Hop: Representing, Resisting and Revolutionizing." I don't know how I can express how much it was an honor to be sitting up there with people whose work I have respected for the past 15 years. I admit, I wondered why I sat with reknowned Bgirl, Asia One and Kuttin' Kandi as well as awesome lyricists, Cihautl- Ce and Shelly Quest.

What was revealed to me is that my role is not just being onstage, but being part of the force behind-the-scenes. As an organizer and as an event producer, I work so that there is space for people to showcase their skills. We often do get looked over and Kuttin Kandi wanted to bring that to light.

And I am very thankful and grateful to be part of this first of many festivals to come!

Just came back home from a board meeting regarding strategic planning and basically the first few steps we are taking in 2012. I went in feeling overwhelmed but left feeling optimistic. We are taking a different approach iin how we are conducting business and it is unnerving as it is exciting.

So here we go...

I came home from the meeting and found some exciting news. Remember when I pleaded on behalf of my friends from Sessions LA?

Well, they are fully funded! In fact the surpassed their goal of $15,000! They raised over $16900 and that is not including they money the raised from their benefit concert. Congratulations to DJ Phatty, Laurence, Mike Nailat, DJ Lino and SoulSpeak as well as SIPA and anybody who has donated their time, served the community, raised funds, donated and overall was a soldier to the cause.

But all that was old news (I didn't have time to post the update.)

What's pretty cool is the write up they had on CNN.

So congrats on AGAIN on the  publicity and the write- up. Good to see they manage to get some coverage on such a wonderful program.

This pic was from Phatty's Tumblr. The sessions don't end when the class ends. The cypher continues outside of class.

Hip Hop Saves Lives: Divine Feline Recap and Save Sessions LA

Due to the economic cutbacks, many programs that are devoloped for edifying and empowering our community are in danger of disappearing. I have learned that LA government officials would approach nonprofit organizations to develop and run programs that would address current needs of communities. For example, the district of LA in which FilAm Arts works under asked FAA to start up an after school program for the youth (both Filipino and non-Filipino descent) who live area of Historic Filipinotown to sway them away from gangs, violence and drugs. Eskwela Kultura was formed and it provided a place for the youth in the area a place to go and learn through creative expression. It gained in popularity and local artists were hired to teach various art classes that range from hip hop dance, visual arts and HTML programming.

But what happens with the funding runs out and the government can no longer provide the money needed to continue these needed programs? It's not the nonprofit's fault (as many mistaken it to be) and it is the state of the economy will not change overnight.

It's when we turn to the community- parents, educators, artists, professionals, students, everyone- to band together and collectively make sure that there are outlets, venues, a safe space for the growth and empowerment of youth.

Fundraising has also developed in a more intricate manner which both parties interact more, thus strengthening the relations between the donors and the nonprofit. It isn't a hand-out they are asking for. It isn't simply just a tax-deduction that is rewared. It is the idea of paying forward; seeing the immediate payback of the donation recieve.

In my opinion, it's putting where your money is in a more conscientious and direct way. It's investing in your neighborhood and those in it.

Sessions LA
One program that needs our help is  Sessions, an afterschool program offered to innercity youth who reside in the Echo Park area of LA. Formed by my homies DJ Phatrick and Bambu , this program, which is offered free to the youth, provides that alternate option and safe space venue for kids to go to after school is let out.

SESSIONS LA is a music writing, production, recording, & DJ program for youth and young adults in Los Angeles. Our mission is to promote youth development and nurture critical thinking through unique music education programming developed by a group of experienced DJs, Producers, and Music Educators.

If you check out their Indie Go Go link, you will see that there are rewarded to each donation specified. As you can see, it's not a "handout" but a "paying forward" gesture and each dollar goes directly to this program.

Another example of the community coming together is DIVINE FELINE LA. Headed up by Star, this annual event features an all-female lineup and proceeds go to a nonprofit. This night, that went down on October 22,  was dedicated to J.U.I.C.E, Justice by Uniting in Creative Energy, a project also dedicated to empowering, nurturing and teaching youth through the elements of hip hop. You see, Hip Hop is our inner city's sports program. While some schools have the funding to teach kids the fundamentals of competition, inner strength, comradery and sportsmanship through sports, some families don't have the means to provide their kids that same experience. This is where these programs come in.

Divine Feline was AMAZING! It was a night of dance, video, fashion, lyricism, turntabalism and art. I was able to catch the tail end of the show and was blessed to catch Earthstonez  and Miki Vale on the mic; DJ Evoke, DJ MonaLisa, Michelle Q and DJ Ledesa on the turntables.

One of the most memorable performances of the night was the main feature of the night, LadyBug Mecca of Digable Planets! She did an amazing set and at the end of the night, reminded me why I loved hip hop so much.

I work in the entertainment industry so I rarely get starstruck or geek out on any body. But I have been a fan of Mecca since college and her music was part of that time where I was heavily in the scene (particularly the dance scene.) She also represented a rare true female voice in hip hop where her skill matched her intelligence, grace and beauty and she didn't have to unneedingly flaunted herself in an oversexual manner. She truly was one of my early role models in the hip hop scene who was positive and I have so much to thank her for.

Faded Beats n' Pieces
October 1st, 2011

I was one of the featured artists for this month's Beats n' Pieces. Faded is a clothing company that is now throwing art parties showcasing art, live art by the legendary NASA crew and soundscape provided by LA's loved DP Crew. They are now being more consistant and I would love to see this event pop off monthly.

The theme of this month's show was vinyl records. Faded provided the artists LPs to paint on. I had an initial idea but at the very last minute, I decided to paint over it and paint what was relevant to me at the time. We lost a very very good friend the week before. Passed away suddenly and it had shook all of our lives. E was a loving soul who dedicated his life to the arts and music movements in San Francisco. He worked with the youth and helped gave many of the mentees a sense of direction.

I miss him terribly. I had to paint this piece, lil' "darklings", as he lovingly coined the term, holding bleeding heart doves, promising to keep them safe and protected.

Much love to the Faded Crew, NASA, DP Crew and Beats N' Pieces affiliators
