Philippine Goddess of Morning, Hanan, is waking up the last pine tree and transitioning it from winter to spring. The pine tree is seen as a sacred tree symbolizing protection and healing. This piece signifies new beginnings. 

This piece was created on July 2022, specifically for Cactus Gallery’s Loteria VIII art show.  I have been wanting to show my art at this gallery for years! Cactus Gallery is a local gallery, showcasing work from artists of different disciplines, both emerging and established. The gallery is Latina-owned and independently operated by Sandra Mastroianni, who stays dedicated in providing this space and supporting local artists.

This annual show is dedicated to Loteria, a popular game of chance from Mexico. I was assigned to the "El Pino" card 49. As with any art show that I do, I tend to focus Filipino references no matter what the theme is.

El Velorio 2013

I have been showcasing at Antonio Pelayo's Dia De Los Muertos show, El Velorio, since the beginning and it only keeps getting better. He teams up with local artists and organizers and each year they pick a nonprofit organization who will benefit from part of our proceeds.

This year's show was held at Plaza De La Raza. The proceeds were also donated to PDLR so that they can continue to advocate and nurture arts in Lincoln Heights.

 

Walking in, they transformed their fountain into a huge altar, celebrating the memories of our ancestors.

 

Got to bump into the homie, Codak. He is busy with his own work but found time to come out and support all his friends that were showcased. In fact, he was in his painting gear.

Speaking of Isaac, he's Antonio's son and already we can see that the apple does NOT fall far from the tree. Not even 18 and he's already killing the graphite and is tattooing as well. Look for him.

All in all, it is such an amazing event. We were able to fill up that entire art center and there was something for everyone.. face painting, art show, vendors, concert, food vendors, workshops. I can't wait for next year!

Nice surprise on Channel 4 News

While at work, I was getting texts from friends and Facebook alerts with a nice surprise! 

My friend Johneric, owner of The Park's Finest in Historic Filipinotown, was featured in an NBC-LA story on AAPIs and the recent immigration trends. The news cameraman gave a great shot of my work.

Countdown to the Strangelets album release

My boyfriend's band is being released in early 2013. Currently, they are working on the last two songs before they send it off to get mastered and then eventually printed and released. It's exciting to see a group's work turn into something tangible after months and months and months of preparation, rehearsals, rework, revision and recording. They put it so much work in this project and each of them busy with other personal things.

 

Back in the summer, the group turned to their artists friends to work on a potential album cover. I was blessed to have them pick one of my paintings as the cover of their EP, Heavy is the Heart.

 

I came up with a digital drawing, in hopes to capture the dream-like quality in much of the band's music. Sweet like lullabies, this collection of shoegaze songs has me daydreaming of laying on the beach, sea breezes wisping my hair as I look up at the stars and just take in their twinkles.

 

Sort of what I was thinking in my illustration, where the universe conspires to make dreams come true by setting the stage up. It's up to the dreamer to take the stand, walk up to that stage and burn like a supernova.

 

 

My submission to the project. However, they decided to use my boyfriend's picture for the cover. All good to me, as I am happy to have a personal piece done. I have been using all my creative skills at my design job that it was nice to let go and do something impulsive as the piece above.

Updated: HYBRIDS group art show at Thumbprint Gallery

Anthony Thomas and I teamed up for this special art show. 

Anthony is a cartoon illustrator/animator/game character developer. He has a skill of developing characters and I knew this collaboration would be fun.

We both have a fascination in mythical creatures from different cultures. One creature we both dig are bakus, creatures that eat dreams but mostly nightmares.

I gave him a base drawing, giving him space to create the creatures in the middle. He then gave it back to me and I added the shading and the details to make it blend more with my characters ( the little girl and her bunny rabbit.)

If you look at it dead on, the Bakus are blue but at an angle, there is an iridescence to it.

CaseMate, Society6 and me

I'm quite happy with the iPhone cases from Society6. I have already sold a few pieces and I am excited to know that there are several people out there who like my work enought that they would want to keep it in their pockets all day.

Once Upon A Time at the Glasshouse Record Store/Gallery

January closed out the holiday season and it welcomed 2012 with new energies, new friendships and chi being thrown on Santa Monica moonlit waves.

But February came fast and hard with art shows: 1st one- Once Upon a Time... From a Favorite Fairy Tale to Our Own.

Opening reception was February 11, 2012 from 6-9pm.

My piece for the show: My rendition of Hans Christian Anderson's "The Little Mermaid."

"The Little Mermaid" was one of my favorite fairy tales when I was young. I remember watching the anime with my mother one weekend. I couldn't understand why she gave up so much for a person she didn't even know. My mother said it was unconditional love. 


Now looking back, I think it is foolish.


What's so romantic about losing your voice, losing your identity , losing your family and world for a man you barely know only to be dissed at the end? 


I now have a better understanding of what unconditional love is. Real love and not one fabricated through fairy tales and lies only because they can't bare to be lonely.

Flashback: Zombie Art Show 2011

As promised, here are the pictures from the 2nd Annualy Zombie Art Show in Long Beach.. Yea, yea, yea, it's mad late. but I've been busy. ha!

I didn't dress up for the occasion. yea, killjoy, right? The funniest part about the night is that if you were not dressed up like a zombie well then you get harrassed by the zombies. All I kept hearing was "braaaaaaains, braaaaaains." and they act like they  were going to chase me. Like this person here (see above.) 

I loved this couple and their dog. I had to take a picture.
